The Sovereignty of God

“Thine, O Lord is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O Lord, and thou art exalted as head above all….and thou reignest over all; and in thine hand is power and might; …Now therefore, our God, we thank thee, and praise thy glorious name.” – 1 Chronicles 29:11-13

God is Sovereign – Meaning God is supreme; all of His creation put together, whether knowingly or unknowingly, cannot thwart His purposes. “The Lord reigneth, he is clothed with majesty; the Lord is clothed with strength, wherewith he hath girded himself: the world also is stablished, that it cannot be moved. Thy throne is established of old: thou art from everlasting” (Psalm 93:1-2). “O come, let us sing unto the Lord: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms. For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In his hand are the deep places of the earth: the strength of the hills is his also. The sea is his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land. O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the Lord our maker. For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand” (Psalm 95:1-7). God is sovereign over His entire creation. As Sovereign, He is absolutely free to do what He knows to be best. God is in control of everything that happens. Man still has a free will, and is responsible for his choices in life. God made mankind to glorify, worship, honor, love and obey Him! (Micah 6:8; John 15:8). Notice, all of God’s creation obey Him except mankind. Nature, sun, stars and even the wind obey God. The animals, donkeys, fish, and even a rooster obey God. Man was also made to fellowship with and worship God. Men of the world ask: “Where is your God?” And the answer is that He is on His throne, receiving worship. God wants a people to worship, obey, love, fear and serve Him. In order to bring this about God created man with a freewill, which limits God. There are now three wills at work, the Divine, the satanic and the human. God will not destroy or control the human will, but He wants the creature to chose Him. This means man has the power to resist, reject or receive God. Love must be given, not taken. If man is not on the side of God, God cannot do anything with him. God will not compel or force him to do anything. The secret of serving the Lord is to simply obey Him. “To obey is better than sacrifice” [1 Samuel 15.22]. He is God.

The Faithfulness of God

“I will sing of the mercies of the Lord for ever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all
generations. For I have said, Mercy shall be built up for ever: thy faithfulness shalt thou establish in the very heavens.”
– Psalm 89:1-8

God is Faithful (I Cor.1:9). Man can be unreliable, untrustworthy, and unfaithful, but everything that God has promised will come to pass. His faithfulness guarantees this fact. God cannot lie. “God is not a man, that he should lie” (Numbers 23:19). What He has said in the Bible about Himself is true. Jesus even said that He is the Truth. This is extremely important for the followers of Jesus because it is on His faithfulness that our hope of eternal life rests. He will honor His promise that our sins will be forgiven and that we will live forever with Him. God is faithful. Our hope for the future rests upon God’s faithfulness. Because He is faithful, His covenants and promises will be honored. God is not as man. God gives what no other can give. He is God.

God is faithful, faithful in all things, faithful at all times. “Know therefore that the Lord thy God, He is God, the faithful God” (Deuteronomy 7:9). This quality is essential to His being, without it He would not be God. For God to be unfaithful would be to act contrary to His nature, which is impossible. Everything about God is great, vast, incomparable. He never forgets, never fails, never falters, never forfeits His word. To every declaration of promise or prophecy the Lord has exactly adhered, every engagement of covenant or threatening He will make good, for “God is not a man, that He should lie; neither the son of man, that He should repent: hath He said, and shall He not do it? or hath He spoken, and shall He not make it good?” (Numbers 23:19). — A.W. Pink

The Faithful Handyworks of God

“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament (what exists above the earth) sheweth his handywork.” (Psalms 19:1). Notice the heavens declare: Declare means to make something unknown “known.” Also notice it says “glory” (singular) not “glories” (plural). Glory emphasis the Creator, not his creations. His handywork (creations) declare or display, as a painting, for all for all to admire, appreciate, and praise. As we see the display of his artwork we should praise the Creator not His handywork.

Self-Sufficiency of God

“Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth,
or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.”

–Psalm 90:1-2

God is Self-sufficient and Self-existing – God is the self-sufficient One who contains all, controls all, who gives all that is given, but who Himself can receive nothing that He has not first given (Acts 17:24-28). God does not need man or any other means for Him to exist. Man is totally dependent upon God, but God is totally independent of all things. God is self-existing and self-sufficient without man. “For thou art great, and doest wondrous things: thou art God alone” (Psalm 86:10). God alone is Great! The Bible says that God has life in Himself (John 5:26). All other life in the universe is a gift from God. God has no needs and there is no way He can improve. God is self-sufficient, and nothing else is necessary to Him. He does not need your help with anything, but because of His grace and love, He allows you to be a part of advancing His plan on earth and being a blessing to others. You are dependent upon God, but God is fully independent and self-sufficient. God is at work controlling and keeping His creation in existence, but He is self-existing. God not only made His creation, but provided the power for His creation to consist and continually exist. “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist” (Colossians 1:16-17). Without God there would be no existence upon or in this earth. All life, including nature, animals, plants, and mankind exists only because of God. He is God.

God is solitary in His majesty, unique in His excellency, peerless in His perfections. He sustains all, but is Himself independent of all. He gives to all, but is enriched by none. Such a God cannot be found out by searching; He can be known, only as He is revealed to the heart by the Spirit through the Word. “Unto God are all His works, from the beginning of the world” (Acts 15:18). — A.W. Pink

The Self-Existence of God – “Only God hath life within himself and from himself. God always was, because he received his being from no other, and none can take away that being which was not given by another. If there were any time before he did exist, or there was something which made him to exist; then life would not then be in him, but in that which produced him into being. He could not then be God, but that other which gave him being would be God. And to say God sprung into being by chance, when we see nothing in the world that is brought forth by chance, but hath some cause of its existence, would be vain. If God is a being by chance, by the same reason He might totally vanish by chance. Such a God that had no life in himself but from chance would not be God! Since he has life in himself, and that there was no cause of his existence, he can have no cause of his limitation. What has life in itself has life without bounds, and can never be deprived of it. Because God lives all other things also life and have their being in him” (Acts 17:28). — Stephen Charnock
