My husband, Jim, was asked to speak in a mid-week service in a church in New Jersey. We had three of our grandchildren with us. The youngest was in the nursery, and the other two (5 and 7 years old) were with me in the service. Before Jim preached, they served communion. At first I thought, “Oh no, the children will want to do this thinking they will get a snack.” I looked around in the church, and saw many young parents with their children with them. The communion service was precious, and was a great opportunity to answer our grandchildren’s questions about the service. They knew that a person must be saved before they could take communion. They then listened to their Poppy (Jim) preach.

This reminded me of the years when we were younger and took our children to church with us. They learned the songs of our faith; they learned how to pray; they learned how to find the books of the Bible; and they followed along during the preaching of God’s Word. “Oh, that there were such an heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them and with their children forever” (Deut. 5:29). I do desire for God to bless our children and grandchildren. That is a mother’s / grandmother’s heart’s desire. How can we do that? “And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up” (Deut. 6:7).

This is how we will receive God’s blessings – by obeying Him. My heart was so blessed that night to see these precious children desiring to learn more about God’s Word. They enjoyed church, not for the fun and the activities we can give them – NO! They enjoyed singing, praying, and learning more about Jesus! “Know, therefore, that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, who keepeth covenant and mercy with them who love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations” (Deuteronomy 7:9).
