The word Selah is written 71 times in the Psalms and 3 times in Habakkuk. Selah is a Hebrew word that means “stop, pause, and listen” or “think about it!” Selah is found at the ending of verses in Psalms and has been interpreted as an instruction calling for a break in the singing of the Psalm. Selah is always written at the end of verses to encourage you to pause, consider, and meditate upon what you have just read. Also the Scriptures often mention a similar word “consider” in 66 verses. So we should think, meditate, and consider what we have just read. Selah! We should… Consider the wondrous works of God (Job 37:14); consider the heavens (Psa. 8:3), consider the work of God (Eccl.7:13), consider this matter (Acts 15:6), consider the lilies (Luke 12:27), consider the ant (Prov. 6:6), consider the ravens (Luke 12:24), and also consider your ways (Hag.1:5). Selah! In Trenton language, Selah could easily mean “Uhhhh huh!” or “How about that!” It could also be a time to “chew your cud” or “sleep on it.”

I have also learned that a proverb is a short sentence or statement with much wisdom. Selah! We should meditate upon words that express thoughts, knowledge and wisdom. Example: A simple word can hurt or help – discourage or delight – Selah! Many definitions of deception and details can disguise and dilute divine doctrines – Selah!. “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver” (Prov. 25:11).

Following are some special Selah words of wisdom that we should pause, and consider: Greatest word is God. Deepest word is soul. Fastest word is time. Darkest word is sin. Loneliest word is alone. Tenderest word is love. Sweetest word is home. Dearest word is mother. Tallest word is dad. Calmest word is peace. Most treasured word is friend. Shortest word is life. Gloomiest word is death. Fullest word is Calvary. Grandest word is Jesus. Most personal word is free-will. Best word is saved. Saddest word is lost. Highest word is Heaven. Lowest word is Hell. Longest word is eternity. Most expedient word is opportunity. Most powerful word is decision. Most sensible word is now. Most foolish word is later. Most regretful word to Jesus Christ is no Selah!
