When you think of Colossians, think of the Apostle Paul as he taught people in Colosse about Perfection in Christ.

Key Verse: “Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus” (Colossians 1:28).

Every Christian needs perfection (maturity / growth) in Christ. Nobody on earth can live perfectly without sin or fault. However, every Christian should be growing in maturity day by day. The book Colossians teaches that maturity is possible through Christ Jesus. The Apostle Paul wrote to the Colossian Christians about their need of maturity. Paul’s helper, Timothy, and another minister, Epaphras, also encouraged those in Colosse toward maturity (1:1, 7).

Paul said that the Colossian Christians already had faith, love, hope, and grace (1:1-8).

Beyond that, they needed to honor Christ as God: Maker of all things, Before all things, Keeper of all things, and Above all things (1:15-19).

If the Christians were already totally perfect, then Paul would not have preached, warned, and taught in this book (1:28). Paul’s goal was to one day present every Colossian Christian to God as mature in Christ (1:28). For this reason, Paul ministered.

If you are a Christian, your goal should be maturity—for yourself—and for others.

Application:
All Christians are born into God’s family as newborn babies that need to grow—to mature. Maturity comes over time spent honoring Christ.
