Think of all the weather warnings you have heard recently. They may have included ones like the following: “Expect up to 3” of rain in only a few hours; we should see snow with temperatures in the teens; a burn ban is in effect because of the drought conditions and low humidity; there is a high wind advisory beginning at 2 pm with wind speeds of 35 mph and gusts up to 60 mph; conditions are right for tornadoes in the area; a heat advisory is in effect with temperatures soaring over 100; there is a fog advisory with very limited visibility; a hurricane warning is in effect and evacuations have been ordered.” It seems these days we are glued to the weather forecasts, wondering what will come next and how we should prepare for it.

Jesus spoke about the weather. “He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, it will be fair weather: for the sky is red. And in the morning, it will be foul weather to day for the sky is red and lowring (very cloudy). O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the sign of the times?” (Matthew 16:2-3). Weather forecasts are valuable because they help us to prepare for what is coming. However, since we know that they are not always correct, we sometimes choose to ignore them. For example, we may ignore the wind advisory and see the trampoline go flying into the neighbor’s yard, or refuse to evacuate and be nearly trapped by the rising waters.

Jesus compared our preparation for weather events to our preparation for His Second Coming. As we can see signs of different weather coming, we should also look around us and see the signs of Jesus’ soon return – wars, famines, earthquakes, pestilences, men living as if there is no God, false prophets, persecutions, Jerusalem surrounded by its enemies, sin abounding, our love for God becoming cold (Matthew 24). This new year could easily be the one when Jesus returns to take His children home to Heaven. Unsaved friend, now is the time to believe Jesus and receive Him for your salvation. Christian, this is the day to live for Him and to tell others of Jesus. Don’t ignore the warning. Jesus is coming soon!
