What’s Up? Duane King (84), founder of Deaf Missions in 1966, Council Bluffs, Iowa, passed away, January 25, 2022. Duane served as executive director for 38 years. In 2007, he resigned but continued working for Deaf Missions in the area of public relations. Chad Entinger now leads the ministry. Sympathy to Peggy, Duane’s wife, and all the people involved at Deaf Missions.

What’s Up? Sympathy to the family of deaf friend, Lois Jean Bearly (73), Kansas City, Missouri, who passed away on January 13, 2022. Lois, attended the Missouri School for the Deaf in Fulton, and was a member of the Deaf Liberty Baptist Church, Pastor Mark Truitt. Lois was well known for her happy smiles, willingness to help, and traveling with church members to special deaf events. She is missed by her family and church family.

What’s Up? Sympathy to the family of deaf friend, Mary Ann Butora, Phoenix, Arizona, who passed away on February 1, 2022. She was a faithful member of the Signs of Life Baptist Church, Pastor Mike Remington. She was an encourager and known for her saying “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” which was often displayed on a t-shirt or bag. She often attended SWM’s Arizona Fantastic Saturday.

What’s Up? SWMI Missionaries to the Deaf, Bruce, Amanda, & Belle Stuart plan to leave for their field of Liberia, West Africa, on April 19. This is a day they have been looking forward to for several years. The Lord, through friends, family, and churches, has provided the needed support. What’s Up? SWM’s Canadian missionaries, Bud and Jenna Ring, are “On the Road Again.” Because of Covid-19 restrictions, they could not travel. Now, restrictions have been lifted for most provinces and they are able to get “out there” teaching sign language and having meetings with the Deaf. Meetings are planned in Manitoba and Alberta. What’s Up? Missionary to the Deaf Jim Sloan, pursuing his Deaf burden in 2021, traveled 20,870 miles in 8 different states and 16 churches, plus one foreign trip to Peru. The highlight was teaching four semesters, 144 classroom hours on “Church Interpreting” at Sword Deaf Baptist College, Clinton, TN, Dr. Fred Adams, president. Plans are being finalized for a trip to Albania in April. He is asking for someone who knows the Albania language to contact him.

What’s Up? Missionary Ronnie Rice during February and March preached in six deaf churches in Florida. Ronnie and Steve Houghton spoke for “Super Deaf Day” at Heritage Baptist Church in St. Augustine. Deaf pastor, Earl Brigham, brought one deaf young man to hear Ronnie preach. That young man received Jesus Christ as his Savior. It was a wonderful day with 89 in attendance.

What’s Up? SWM’s Jon & Diane Barr will host a 10-day Israel Trip March 28 – April 8, 2022. This amazing trip includes 40 sites in Israel, Galilee, and Jerusalem. Everyone here at SWM is excited for those going on this, for most, “once in a lifetime” trip, especially our deaf friends. Pray for safety for the group.

What’s Up? SWM welcomes Jackie Bradford, Trenton, GA, as their newest SWM Volunteer Worker. Her father, Bill R. Gearrin, helped SWM in our beginning days. She said, “My brother and I played with the Camps’ children in the 60’s. As they worked, we played in the floor. I feel it is now my time to help at SWM and follow in my dad’s footsteps.”
